Grade 5 students volunteer for training, and then are available on scheduled days on the school yard during recess to support students in resolving minor conflicts. They wear a vest for easy identification, and know when to refer an issue to the yard duty teachers. This important opportunity for student leadership contributes to the overall safe and respectful school environment we value at Glen Ogilvie.
At outdoor recess time, a large yellow bin is taken out to the yard by student volunteers. Inside the bin are balls, skipping ropes, and other materials to encourage our students to play actively and safely with their friends. This program encourages student responsibility both for the volunteer students who take the bin out and bring it back, and the students who borrow the materials and return them. It also enhances our school focus on healthy, active lifestyle.
Student lunch monitors
Grade 5 student volunteers receive training, and are then assigned to specific classrooms in pairs for the in-class eating portion of both nutrition breaks. Their duties include assisting students with opening containers or milk cartons, helping with tidy up and preparation for dismissal to the yard, and generally maintaining a positive, respectful tone in the classroom. Adult staff are on duty in the hallways and classrooms, and lunch monitors know when to refer a student to them for assistance.
